199 Grows the Top Prize in 2011
199 Blackburn Drive West took home the top award in the annual Front Yard contest in Blackburne Creek this year. The home, on a corner lot in the southeast portion of the community (below left and right) is owned by Lorriane and Ken Howrish. They only moved into the community two years ago and immediately their yard started going through a transformation, which ended in picking up the top prize in the annual contest this year.
Lorraine Howrish said that Ken and her didn't do it to win an award. As she put it "The kind comments from so many people who walk by are the real reward."
Two longtime Blackburne Creek homeowners were named by the judges as the co runners-up. They were 723 Blackwood Crescent, (below right) owned by Sandra and Brad Friesen and 920 Blackett Wynd, the home of Lynn Tennant (below left). This is the first time that the Friesen home on Blackwood Crescent has been named one of the winners, but in 2007 the Tennant home was the overall runner-up.
Special thanks go out to Sonia Hawreliak, who served as Chair of the contest for the second year in a row, along with all the judges who took time out of their schedules to make some very hard decisions.
Here is a list of all homes that were named as finalists:
