2009 Front Yards in Bloom
It was one of the drier summers on record. Despite that, dozens of homeowners in Blackburne Creek took the time, effort and expense to make sure their front yards would be admired last summer.
In 2009, Blackburne Creek joined the City of Edmonton’s Front Yards in Bloom Contest. Although Blackburne Creek has held a front yard contest for several years, the move to joining Front Yards in Bloom provided for a more consistent judging criteria, brand recognition and signage.
In early August, five neighbourhood residents judged each of the finalists and provided their scores. Final scores ended up being very close, especially between the winner, 927 Blackett Wynd (Edwards - shown at left) and next door neighbour, 929 Blackett Wynd (Luke - shown below right). This is the second time in three years that next-door neighbours on Blackett Wynd have captured the top two spots. In 2007 it was 918 winning the front yard contest over 920.
Both 927 and 929 have already been entered in the citywide Front Yards in Bloom Contest for 2010. We wish them all the best and know they will represent Blackburne Creek extremely well.
Judges also commented on the number of homeowners who did the extra work needed to take their front yards to the next level this past summer. There were several new homes that were nominated in 2009, showing that extra effort is being noticed and recognized by the judges.
32 homes were recognized as nominees in late July and of those, 15 were selected as finalists. The finalists were:
75 Blackburn Drive West
173 Blackburn Drive West
425 Blackburn Drive East
